The race for AI will be played out over access to energy – and Europe risks being left behind MetaObs Send an email5 days ago 015Reading time 1 minute Facebook X Linkedin Tumblr Pinterest Reddit VKontakte Odnoklassniki Pocket The US AI Action Plan marks a clear turning point: energy is becoming the lifeblood of this industry. Model training and data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, which many energy providers cannot easily supply. Energy supply could soon become the main bottleneck. The UK has a slight advantage thanks to its AI Growth Zones and Energy Council, which aim to develop data centers powered by clean, reliable energy. But speed is crucial. The US is moving faster, removing regulatory hurdles, accelerating nuclear power, and building grid capacity to meet AI-related demand. China, meanwhile, is directly integrating AI infrastructure into its energy strategy. Europe, on the other hand, risks falling behind due to red tape. Capital will flow to where energy is readily available. The advantage will no longer accrue solely to those who develop the best models, but to those with abundant and scalable energy. Slower regions, deprived of electricity, risk being left behind, drained of talent—an exodus that will be difficult to reverse. Lale Akoner, Market Analyst at eToro Energy
